Otha Day was in the lobby to gather recycling with the intention of transforming used soda bottles into ‘shakers.’ He is the director of ‘Drum to the Beat!,’ an interactive program that brings the joy of “in the moment music” and rhyme to various community organizations. His program holds the belief that if you have a heart beat, you have rhyme and can drum. Our brief conversation left me feeling inspired, warm, and honored to have been in the presence of such a radiating soul.

For some of the students, its their first musuem visit and their first field trip.

—Words of a high school teacher

Nina Krebs knew exactly what she wanted when she walked up to the box office with a smile on her face and ten-pound camera daggling from her neck. “Where can I see Katherine Grosse?” she asked like a child on Christmas morning. Nina and her husband David had flown from Sacramento, California just to see the exhibit after learning about Grosse’s One Floor Up More Highly in “Art in America.” The bright colors, striking dimensions and ambiguity of the work captivated Nina’s imagination. After researching and fantasying about the piece for months, she knew she had to see it for herself; So, here she was.

“It was everything I could have imagined and more,” she breathlessly explained upon her return to the lobby. She had wholeheartedly thrown herself into the MASS MoCA experience, allowing the remnant ace of history, novelties of innovation and complexities of emotion carry her through the galleries. Enamored with the museum, Nina returned for a second visit the next day. When I asked her if her second visit was worth it, she replied, “It was even better.”

Above is the art of Ms. Nina Krebs. More work and insight into her thoughtful lifestyle can be found at http://ninakrebs.com/

Three year old Piper may be MASS MoCA’s biggest fan. Whether coming to the galleries for a play date, an afternoon with her parents, or just to visit the art she considers friends, Piper’s positive energy is contagious. Here she plays with Education Coordinator Rachel, constructing her own version of Death at Frequency-141

Artist Stephanie Rothenburg visited the MASS MoCA galleries this December. Here, she stands beside a “lobby activity” inspired by her work. It asks, “If you could have a job in  ’Second Life’ what would you do?”

We didn’t build these galleries to say no.
